While on tour with WVARF, I had the pleasure of meeting this beautiful lady, Jan Smith, who is the executive director of The Op Shop, a non-profit organization dedicated to training and employing adults with disabilities.
As I walked in and met Jan, I felt a keen sense of hardship and humility. Jan has dedicated the last 26 years of her life, taking the position she now holds from previously being the book keeper.
As I began to talk with her more and interview her, she broke out in tears as she began to ask for my help. She asked me, with sincerity and humility, if I could create a video for them to send to Ellen DeGeneres to ask for her help. They had been trying to get help with funding for the last year, and been working on building the Work Day Cafe for several years now, but couldn’t get it done.
With a waiting list of 50 people with a disability, waiting to get trained to find work they value (and help them be more sustainable), I knew I had to do this. So, right there, camera still running, she began to speak of her heart for the Work Day Cafe.
Please watch this video, share it on Facebook/Twitter and tag Ellen, and help Jan, The Op Shop, and those with a disability build this Work Day Cafe.
